saturday surfin’

Here’s my top internet picks for the week…each with the ‘because’ of why I chose them.  Check them out, and let me know what you think… “Like” or “Dislike”, agree or disagree?  And give me your ‘because’!!

Because… maybe not everyone has had their fill of the Beyonce brouhaha (or even a clue what I’m referring to) so if you want to catch up on that, here’s a great conversation on the topic from Kristen (Rage Against the Minivan) and Elizabeth Esther (Elizabeth Esther: I Use My Words)…

Because… a lot of discussion has been going on of late about sexuality, virginity, the ‘purity culture’ of the church (as you may have read some of in two of my recommended links last Saturday) which has spurred my thinking and inspired a few posts of my own.  If you happen to like controversy and debate, a very interesting dialogue has been going on at The Gospel Coalition (link below) about some of these topics.  Don’t read just the post, but check out the pursuant dialogue in the comments as well.  (Shout out to my very intellectual friend Laura for engaging in a very courteous and challenging discussion on this post!)  (And, for the record, I happen to disagree with the actual TGC article, but it has all the links to those whose posts I would share, and feel like it’s a balanced way to present to you all sides of the argument(s) and let you weigh things for yourself)  IMO…Go Sarah Bessey and Rachel-Held Evans!!

Commitment-Free Critics and the ‘Christian Virginity Cult’

Because… the practical is oh-so-important…  :)

4 Rules for Teaching Your Son to Keep House

Because… I am so totally lacking in the gift of mercy, and have so much to learn from those who possess it…

In Which I Bless the Merciful

Because… I so love when someone is able to clearly articulate the difference between understanding something simply because it is practical, works, or just makes sense…WITHOUT having to label it as “the RIGHT way” or “Biblical”.  (Yes, there is a difference!)  (Very much loving Jenny’s blog, in case I haven’t already mentioned that…  Such thoughtful and articulate writing!)

John Piper, Women in Combat, and How Gender Roles Fall Short of the Glory of Humankind

Because… I love Frank Sinatra, and while I hold the position that women are equal with men, that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate politeness and good manners.

“I may sound old-fashioned, but I want to think all women should be treated like I want my wife, daughters, and granddaughters to be treated. I notice today that good manners—like standing up when a woman enters the room, helping a woman with her coat, letting her enter an elevator first, taking her arm to cross the street—are sometimes considered unnecessary or a throwback…no woman is offended by politeness.” —Frank Sinatra

Because…  I love Pinterest!!  My top pins for this week…

Love me some funny…
